30 more wagons for Chipata-Mchinji railway line arrive


Chipata, July 25, 2014, ZANIS  —-  30 more wagons for the Chipata-Mchinji railway line have arrived and over K 700,000 has so far been raised from the project for the month of May, 2014.


The railway has also managed to transport about 27,705 metric tonnes of cargo along the Nacala corridor in the same period.


ZANIS reports that  Zambia Railways General Manager for Nacala corridor Moses Sipumo confirmed the development in an interview, today.

 

Mr. Sipumo expressed happiness with the operations of the company since it started operating in May this year.


He said the arrival of 30 wagons brings the number of wagons to 81 out of the 100 expected by December this year.


He noted that a lot of people have started appreciating the Nacala corridor route as it has proved to be the shortest route to the east coast.

 

The route is also by December targeted to transport 100 metric tonnes of cargo, he said.


Mr. Sipumo added that there is need for the business community to take advantage and start using the route.


He further disclosed that the company was also doing a lot of sanitizations and marketing to ensure that people fully understand the operations and advantage of using the railway line.


The first train on the Chipata-Mchinji railway started operating in May and transported about 210 metric tonnes of goods to the port of Nacala in Mozambique.
