A 44-year-old man of Musenga village in Kasama died on the spot in a road traffic accident along the Kasama-Mbala road.
This happened after the deceased jumped off the moving truck while trying to pick his luggage that had fallen off but was run over by the rear wheels of the motor vehicle.
Northern Province Police Commissioner, Charity Katanga, confirmed the accident and named the deceased as Fredrick Changala.
She said the accident happened on Sunday around 20:30 hours at Nondo area.
Ms Katanga identified the driver of the vehicle registration number ABM 6320 as Boston Sikanda, 30, also of Kasama.
She added that the driver has been apprehended to help with investigations.
The body of the deceased is lying in Kasama General Hospital mortuary awaiting post-mortem.
Ms Katanga urged motorists to desist from overloading and the use of trucks to ferry passengers, especially during Munada (periodic market), saying that trucks were meant for transportation of goods only.
She also appealed to traffic officers to be alert because a lot of motorists are flouting traffic regulations and going against the Road Traffic Act.
