A 38-year-old security officer has been detained at the Nchelenge Police Station in Luapula Province for causing death by dangerous driving.

Luapula Province Commissioner of Police, Malcom Mulenga, said the fatal accident involving a Toyota Land Cruiser Prado registration number ALB 9900 occurred around 18: 10 hours May 5th.

Mr Mulenga said the over-speeding vehicle hit and instantly killed an eight-year-old Martha Lengwe of Dyson village in Chief Kambwali’s area as she tried to cross the road along the Nchelenge-Kashikishi road about 4 km from the Boma.

He identified the officer from the Office of the President (OOP) Special Division (SD) as Mathews Mubita of house number 38, of Robby compound.

He said the deceased suffered a deep cut on the forehead and the body is at the St Paul’s Mission Hospital mortuary awaiting post mortem.

He disclosed that the driver remains in police custody and that he will formally be charged for causing death by dangerous driving.

The Police Chief further said the vehicle has been impounded and currently packed at the Nchelenge Police Station.
