—-A water scheme project aimed at providing piped water to residents of Lukwesa chiefdom of Mwense district is to begin soon.

Education Deputy Minister who is also Mwense Central Member of Parliament, David Mabumba, confirmed the development during a series of meetings with residents in the area.

Mr Mabumba said consultants have been engaged to assess the possible method of putting up piped water facilities in Lukwesa chiefdom.

He said once the water scheme project is completed, people will have access to clean drinking water, adding that cases of waterborne diseases, such as cholera, will be a thing of the past.

And speaking during the same meetings, ministry of local government and housing Senior Engineer for rural water supply and sanitation, Ulanda Nyirenda, said the programme will start once the assessment is completed.

Meanwhile, Lukwesa residents have expressed happiness with the gesture and appealed to the Ministry of Local Government and Housing to quickly implement the programme.

They said the area is prone to diarrhoeal diseases because residents drink dirty water from Luapula river as they do not have alternative sources of clean water.

The water scheme project will cater for over 20,000 residents including Lukwesa secondary school once implemented.
