12th MISA Zambia Annual Media Awards – Call for Entries

Theme: Promoting Critical Journalism

MISA Zambia Media Freedom Award
The MISA Zambia Media Freedom award is in recognition of the work of individuals or institutions that have made significant contribution to the promotion of media freedom in Zambia. The excellence which the award acknowledges can be achieved either through reportage, or in other ways such as media law reform lobbying or training.

MISA Zambia Best Coverage Award (Print, Radio and Television)
The MISA Zambia Best coverage award will recognise coverage that is analytical, critical, cutting-edge and seeks to promote good governance and democracy in Zambia.

Best Health Governance Reporting Award – Sponsored by CHAZ (Print, Radio and Television)
The awards will recognize reporting that is innovative around health related issues in Zambia.

Best Business Reporting Award (sponsored by Zambia Institute of Chartered Accountants)
The prospective winners of the category will be expected to demonstrate excellent research and insight, clear and balanced presentation of various business issues that impact on the Zambian economy.

The Best Anti-Corruption Reporting Award – sponsored by Anticorruption Commission (ACC) Zambia (Print, Radio and Television)
The award will recognize creative and outstanding reporting on corruption issues in the country. The winner will walk away with a brand new blackberry as a prize, trophy and cash of prize.

Best Aviation Reporting Award (sponsored by National Airports Corporation)
The Best Aviation Reporting Award will recognize journalistic work on civil aviation that is innovative and original. The topics must be well researched and be of relevance to the development of this sector in Zambia as well as key developments in the sector.

Best HIV/AIDS Reporting Awards (Print, Radio and Television) Sponsored by PEPFAR
These awards will recognize reporting that is innovative around issues of HIV and AIDS prevention, promoting positive living and adherence to treatment, voluntary counselling and testing including access to treatment facilities.

Best Electricity Reporting Award (Print, Radio and Television) sponsored by ZESCO
The story must bring out latest developments in the electricity industry globally and nationally. Secondly, it must highlight challenges as well as solutions to current challenges in access to electricity. Lastly, the story should include aspects of environmental sustainability

Best Capital Markets Reporting Award Sponsored by the Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC)
This award is aimed at creating awareness about the Zambia Capital Markets and will recognize reportage that is informative, accurate and presented creatively while shading light on developments in the Capital Markets as well as how the Capital Markets operate and benefit the Zambian economy, citizens and the corporate world.

Best Telecommunications reporting Award (Print, Radio and Television) (Sponsored by Zamtel)
The Best Telecommunications Reporting award is meant to recognize reporting that highlights the benefits of telecommunication in Zambia, seeks to promote access to telecommunication through addressing issues of policy, laws and the economic environment in Zambia.

Best Energy Reporting Award (sponsored by the Energy Regulation Board) (Print, Radio and Television)
The purpose of this award is to help encourage journalists to report creatively and correctly about Energy issues. This reportage could be on alternative means of energy such as bio-mass, geothermal energy, sun, wind and rain. It should also include investments made in this area and how they affect and influence the country’s development. This award can be achieved through reportage that is in-depth and brings out all the aspects concerning energy resources, explained in a clear manner for an average individual’s understanding.

Best Sports Reporting Award (Sponsored by Airtel) (print, radio and TV categories)
This award will recognize the best journalists in the area of sports that is creative and informative. It is not limited to football but all other sporting disciplines.

Best Business Reporting Award (sponsored by Zambia Institute of Chartered Accountants)
The prospective winners of the category will be expected to demonstrate excellent research and insight, clear and balanced presentation of various business issues that impact on the Zambian economy. Such articles should be written in an objectivity manner.

General MISA Zambia media awards guidelines:
1 Content refers to facts, their accuracy, context and background, attribution and multi-sourcing of information;
2 Language and style is the linguistic organisation, coherence and ability to simplify jargon so that readers, viewers and listeners easily understand;
3 Originality and creativity refers to evidence that shows the extent to which the entry is generated either as a result of routine work and efforts made to improve upon this or as a result of individual initiative and effort;
4 Quality of sound and picture refers to the degree of accuracy with which the producer of a radio or television programme was able to capture the original emitted sound waves or environment in which the picture, either motion or still, was captured using various devices.

Adjudication/ Eligibility
The entries to these awards will be judged by an independent body of judges drawn from well-seasoned media personnel in Zambia who have held high positions in their journalism career. The Media Awards are open to both private and public media of all forms that publish to the Zambian populace. Eligible individuals or institutions should be Zambian.

The nominee must show proof of publication of stories submitted for adjudication. Nominations should be submitted to the 12th MISA Zambia Media Awards Committee, c/o MISA Zambia, P.O. Box 32295, Lusaka or delivered to the MISA Zambia Secretariat on Plot 3814 Martin Mwamba Road, Olympia Park, Lusaka. Or emailed to [email protected] or [email protected] . The Deadline is 19 April 2014.
