A Patriot Front–PF Ward Councillor in Kawambwa district has been sentenced to three years imprisonment with hard labour for theft by public servant .

 

The offence is contrary to section 277 Cap 87 0f the Laws of Zambia.

 

Before Magistrate Nandipa Ngulube was Chansa Manyetela ,37, of E21 suburb compound in Kawambwa district who was charged with theft by public servant.

 

Disclosing the matter to ZANIS in Mansa, Luapula Province Police Commissioner Malcolm Mulenga said Manyetela a Patriotic Front Ward Councillor for Kawambwa Ward was arrested and charged for theft in January 2014.

 

Facts of the offence are that Manyetela collected 110 pockets of cement and 31 iron sheets for different projects in the ward from Kawambwa district council.

 

Mr. Mulenga said out of the total building materials the councillor collected 45 pockets of cements and 12 iron sheets valued at K4,725.00 meant for a project at Kawambwa Primary School but did not deliver the items to the intended project.

 

He said this came to the knowledge of the school authorities during a tour and inspection of projects within the constituency by the area Member of Parliament NicksonChilangwa.

 

The theft was unearthed when Mr. Chilangwa while in the district wanted to know how the building materials bought using the Constituency Development Fund -CDF were used.

 

Chansa Manyetela has since been convicted and sentenced to three years imprisonment with hard larbour with effect from 14 March, 2014.
