Opposition Alliance Chairman Malimba Masheke has demanded to know why Police officers were on Friday last week deployed to surround the Parliament building.

Gen. Masheke says he is interested to know the motive behind such deployment as there was clearly nothing that could have necessitate such an action to be taken that police officers can be sent to a place where unarmed Members of Parliament were gathered.

Gen. Masheke, who is also former Prime Minister under the United National Independence Party (UNIP), says he also finds such an action by the police as unprecedented in the country’s history as well as elsewhere outside the Zambian parliament.

He has told Qfm news in a telephone interview that he does not see any panic that could have necessitate such action from the Police as not even Members of Parliament as they enter the Parliament Building are allowed to enter with weapons.

The Opposition Alliance chairman notes that this is why he hopes that there will be an explanation as to what lead to such an action by the Police as such development as surrounding Parliament cannot be allowed to take place in a Democratic country like Zambia.

He has also reminded the ruling Patriotic Front (PF) to be mindful of why it is in government as such development that are now taking place in the country as was observed on Friday week at Parliament is worrying.
