Zambezi District Commissioner Catherine Mukuma has hailed the Disaster Management and Mitigation Unit (DMMU) for scoring success in 2013 in supporting vulnerable families in Zambezi East and West banks.

Ms Mukuma disclosed that the district received bags of mealie- meal, cooking oil and Kapenta to help families that were affected by hunger.

She also revealed that 100 metric tonnes of maize were distributed in the West bank where people were surviving on mangoes and wild fruits.

Ms Mukuma was speaking when Deputy Minister in office of the Vice President Davies Mwango called on her in Zambezi yesterday.

And speaking at the same occasion, Mr Mwango explained that the mandate of his office is to respond to disasters.

Mr. Mwango said DMMU would at all times offer support to the vulnerable in times of disaster.

He noted that Zambezi West was prone to disaster because of perennial floods in the area.

Mr. Mwango said that DMMU has been putting measures to mitigate effects of disaster although the department was still looking for a lasting solution to all flood prone areas.

The deputy minister is in the district to asses flood prone areas and resettlement schemes in the district.
