GOVERNMENT has earmarked mothers’ shelters in hospitals as training centres for healthcare and agriculture.
Vice-President Guy Scott said the shelters are vital in maternal care service hence the facilities will also enable the mothers who are waiting for delivery to be availed short courses.
He said this yesterday during a handover ceremony of a mother’s shelter and a kitchen at Chipata General Hospital in Chipata.
He said in future, mother’s shelters countrywide will have short courses in healthcare and agriculture.
“These shelters are critical to the pregnant mothers who travel to all parts of the province but do not have accommodation when they come to the hospital,” he said.
Rehabilitation of Chipata General Hospital’s mothers‘and relatives’ shelters cost over K70,000 and the shelter is expected to ease accommodation crises faced by pregnant mothers in the province.
And Chipata General Hospital acting medical superintendent Daniel Makawa said the rehabilitation of the facilitiy has contributed to the improved maternal attendance where 450 pregnant mothers benefited from the facility last year.
Dr Makawa said of 3,088 deliveries conducted last year, 450 benefited from the facility, giving the community an opportunity to fully embrace the need for institutional deliveries, whose aim is to reduce the currently high maternal mortalities being recorded.
He commended the ministers’ wives’ club which helped to raise funds to rehabilitate the facility at the hospital.
Charlotte Scott, the vice-president’s wife, who is also club matron said the funds mainly came from golf fundraising in Lusaka and the business community in Chipata.
She said the shelters are vital in maternal care service and the handover of the facilities will benefit more pregnant mothers in the province.
Provincial Minister Sichone Malozo commended minister’s wives club for helping raise the funds for the facilities.
Mr Malozo said this year the Chipata District Hospital will be constructed at a cost of K2.6 million and this will help ease congestion at Chipata General Hospital.
