Shoddy road works disappoint minister
Chipata, January 17, 2014, ZANIS…..Local Government Deputy Minister
Nicholas Banda has expressed disappointment with quality of works on
Township roads in Chipata and Lundazi districts.

Speaking yesterday when he called on Eastern Province Permanent
Secretary Dr. Chileshe Mulenga in Chipata, Mr Banda said the newly
constructed township roads are of low quality.

Mr Banda noted that the contractor Sable construction company needs to

improve on the road works.

He said there is need for continued monitoring of the road works by
councils in both Chipata and Lundazi districts.

Mr Banda noted that councils do not frequently monitor the
construction of road in the two districts.

He expressed concern that the newly constructed roads may not last and
stressed the need to ensure that the road works are done to acceptable
standards.

And Dr Mulenga attributed the failure by councils to monitor the road
works to incapacities saying the engineers are not qualified to
monitor and supervise the road works.

Dr Mulenga said most of the positions in the councils are being manned
by unqualified personnel and stressed the need to address the
situation.

He appealed to the Local Government Service Commission to employ
qualified personnel to fill the positions if the councils are to
improve operations.

Sable Construction Company was awarded a K97.7million contract for the
construction of the Chipata/Lundazi road.

The contract also included 10 kilo meters of township roads.

A total of K89 million will be spent on township roads in Chipata district.
