—–An opposition leader in Mazabuka District has thanked government through the Office of the Vice President for the assistance it has rendered to people in his area who were affected by heavy rains recently.

Kalama Ward Councillor, Amoni Shanabawato, told ZANIS in Mazabuka that he, together with people in the ward were grateful to the government for the quick response.

Mr Shanabwato commended the National Disaster Management and Mitigation Unit under the Office of the Vice President for acting swiftly and providing tents and foodstuffs to villagers whose houses were razed by heavy rains over the weekend.

Mr Shanabwato, who is a UPND councillor, observed that there is always need to put politics aside and acknowledge the good things that government does, especially during times of disasters.

He stated that about 20 families in Manyaana area were over the weekend left homeless and without food after heavy rains and storms destroyed their houses, a situation that created a lot of panic among those affected.

Mr Shanabawato, however, observed that the response by government was timely in bringing to the area tents and other forms of assistance to ease the sufferings of the victims.

And District Commissioner, Eugene Munyama, who this morning visited the area, said government remains committed to respond to all disasters and other emergencies regardless of the areas, social and political affiliation.
