THE Copperbelt University Students Union (COBUSU) has praised Government’s move to allocate K404.3 million towards construction of students’ hostels in the three public universities in the country.

Finance Minister Alexander Chikwanda in the 2014 National Budget presented on Friday announced an education sector infrastructure budget of K404.3 million for the University of Zambia, Copperbelt University (CBU) and Mulungushi University.

COBUSU president Oscar Mbewe in an interview yesterday welcomed Government’s gesture of allocating funds for hostels at the public universities.

“As a students’ union, we welcome the move because it came out straight for hostel accommodation and when you look at all the three public universities, the biggest challenge faced is the problem of accommodation,” Mr Mbewe said.

He said this was the reason that any effort aimed at accelerating the process for constructing students’ hostels deserved appreciation.

Accommodation crisis has been the source of confusion at CBU, UNZA and Mulungushi where students and managements have on a number of occasions clashed.
