Sata to outline Zambia’s vision

The President, who arrived here yesterday, will be the second last speaker of the day.
Mr Sata is expected to tell the general heads of State debate how Zambia has fared in the attainment of the Millennium Development Goals.
He would also outline major reforms Zambia has made towards poverty alleviation, gender mainstreaming, and peace and security.
Meanwhile, Commerce, Trade and Industry Minister Emmanuel Chenda says despite the growth in global trade opportunities, Zambia is yet to fully respond to the Information Communication Technology (ICT) connectivity challenge.
Mr Chenda said beyond the scope of regional integration, Zambia was yet to shift its focus from over-reliance on Overseas Development Assistance as an important source of development assistance, including for ICT connectivity.
He said initiatives particularly by United Nations (UN) organs such as the Economic Commission for Africa should assist countries develop comprehensive strategies for maximising the benefits of infrastructure development.
Mr Chenda said this during a high-level forum on south-south economic cooperation for sustainable development.
The minister said the assistance should have a focus on helping countries develop strategies to fully exploit their potential and to integrate into the world economy.
Meanwhile, UN Secretary General Ban Ki Moon has welcomed the Southern African Development Community’s contribution to the pursuit of peace and stability in the Great Lakes region.
Mr Ban was happy with the regional bloc’s strong support both to the Peace, Security and Cooperation Framework, and to the Uganda Talks between the Democratic Republic of the Congo Government and the M23 rebels.
