Mauritius ,   Seychelles bow out of COSAFA Senior challenge

Kitwe, July 11, 2013, ZANIS —- Seychelles was sent packing  on a sad yesterday  after a 4 nil  thumping  by resilient Mauritius in the 2013 COSAFA Senior challenge Cup tournament.

But the victory was in vain as both teams have been booted out of the on-going tournament after the group leaders Brave Warriors of Namibia qualified to the quarter finals on better points.

In the game played at the refurbished Nkana stadium in Kitwe yesterday, Mauritius displayed a good game from the start  by easily penetrating the weak Seychelles defence who allowed  four answered goals.

ZANIS sports reports that  Mauritius strikers John Calambe netted in the first  goal in the 21st minute and Louis Pithia scored from a rebound ball in the 35th minute.

This was  after  Pithia missed a penalty kick which was awarded after a Seychelles defender  Steve Henriette was red carded for preventing a ball from going into the net with a hand.

Jean Pierre netted the fourth goal for Mauritius to seal the formality victory for the Islanders after penetrating the porous Seychelles defence.

But despite the formality game, Mauritius striker Christopher L’enclume walked away with a K5.4 million check presented to him by Mopani Copper Mines Plc after he was chosen as man of the Match.

Mauritius Coach Alcabar Patel regretted that the victory came from a formality match which would not grant the team continued stay in the tournament.

Speaking to journalists after the match,  Patel said his team has learnt a lot about playing in an international tournament and hoped it will perform  better in future international tournaments.

And Seychelles Couch Jan Mak said he was disappointed with his team’s performance.

Mak said his players failed to follow the instructions they were given for the game.

He said his players made a lot of mistakes especially in defence which led to them conceding four goals.

He added that the red card awarded to one of the defenders also contributed to the demoralization of the other players.

He however said that he has also let a lot of lessons about playing in an international tournament.
