Government has strongly condemned the burning to death of an elderly couple on grounds of witchcraft by irate residents in Ndola’s Kasongo area on the Copperbelt.

Chief Government Spokesperson Kennedy Sakeni said the act is illegal, inhuman and intolerable and will not go unpunished.

Mr. Sakeni has since called on law enforcers to ensure perpetrators of the brutal killing of the named couple are brought to book.

ZANIS reports that the Government spokesperson , who is also Information and Broadcasting minister said this in a statement issued in Lusaka today.

Mr. Sakeni, who is also Minister of Information and Broadcasting Services, noted that the law is clear therefore people should report any wrongdoing to law enforcement agencies and not take the law into their own hands.

He further sent a strong warning that anyone resorting to taking the law into their own hands will face the full force of the law.

Mr. Sakeni however on behalf of government, conveyed a message of condolences to the bereaved family on sad and brutal killing of their loved ones.

He said government will ensure that the safety and security of its citizens are upheld and protected at all times.

Recently, residents in Kasongo area on the Ndola Kitwe dual carriageway pounced on Jungo Chisola 80 and his wife Mutengu Sankananu whom they beat until they passed out and later piled tyres on them before setting them ablaze.

The couple was suspected of practicing witchcraft.
