Mumbwa, June 15, ZANIS —-World Vision Zambia has donated teaching materials worth KR330, 000 to 33 schools in Mumbwa to improve literacy levels in the district.

Presenting the materials yesterday at Kanwanzhiba primary school about seven kilometers North of Mumbwa Boma, Programme Manager for Mumbwa, Wilfred Mufwambi said a research conducted last year shows that children of an average age of 12 had only 15 per cent display basic reading skills.

Mr Mufwambi explained that as a child focused organization, they engaged the Ministry of Education through the DEBS office in order to address the situation that was endangering the future development of the district.

He said World Vision Mumbwa has developed a coordinated plan to improve literacy levels in the district especially where it is active in Chiefdoms of Kabulwebulwe and Kaindu.

The Programme Manager pledged to continue investing in education as it is one of the critical pillars in fighting poverty.

Mr Mufwambi added that the institutional goal is to contribute to improved child learning outcomes which include increased proportion of children who complete primary education in a structured learning environment and improved functional levels of reading for adolescents so that they are ready for economic opportunities.
