——Chief Simamba of the Bagande people in Siavonga district has bemoaned the increased number of girls dropping out of school due to early marriages in his chiefdom.

Chef Simamba said parents should understand that marrying off their school-going daughters is not a blessing but a curse.

He noted that parents marrying off their girl children at a tender age should be charged and punished so that the trend is put to a halt.

The traditional leader said this when he addressed a community meeting in Nabutezi village.

He stated that there is need to protect the girl child so that they could complete their education and attain their dreams.

The chief observed that parents were not doing much to help their girl child get educated.

The traditional leader said parents marry off their children based on their selfishness where they do not even benefit.

Chief Simamba has appealed to headmen in his chiefdom not to hesitate reporting cases of early marriage to relevant authorities in order to eradicate premature marriages among  girl children.

He also warned elders marring off young girls to desist from the trend or face the law, adding that it was wrong because they ruin the future of the young girls.
