MMD youth add pressure to party convention

Lusaka, April 29, 2013, ZANIS…..The Movement for Multiparty Democracy (MMD) Youth Convention Pressure Group is concerned that the delay by their party to hold the national convention within the one month as petitioned might give an opportunity for political opponents to continue poaching members.

Youth Spokesperson, Leslie Chikuse, noted that the delay will allow other parties to poach MMD members most of who he said have lost confidence in the leadership of MMD president, Nevers Mumba.

In a statement made available to ZANIS in Lusaka today, Mr Chikuse cited Canicious Banda, Lawrence Zimba and Misheck Mutelo of Kapiri Mposhi and Lukulu constituencies respectively as some of the members who have since been poached by political opponents.

Mr Chikuse noted that the fellow opposition parties have already used the vulnerability and weakness of the current MMD leadership to adopt MMD’s strongholds, adding that if the convention is held as per authority of Article 15 of the MMD’s constitution, it will provide an opportunity to rebrand and reconcile the party.

He has since appealed to general membership of the MMD not to leave the part but remain in and help organize and mobilize the party.

Mr Chikuse also called on members who have left the MMD party to join other parties to return and offer quality leadership to the MMD, the party in which he said they invested time and knowledge.

“We also appeal to those in NEC to adhere to the demands of the general membership which has invoked Article 15 of the MMD constitution. We would also like to thank the individuals who were instrumental in enacting this clause 15 of the MMD constitution which gives the party members authority to audit the leadership’s performance and where need be demand for a specific ultimatum to be abided at all cost,” Mr Chikuse stated.

He stressed that the action by those who have petitioned and those who are in the process of doing so is justifiable as that is the only way of resuscitating the MMD.

Recently the MMD provincial committees issued an ultimatum to the MMD NEC to organize an extra-ordinary convention within the next one month without fail.
