— A 35-year-old pregnant woman has given birth in a banana boat in Chilubi district in Northern Province.

The incident happened on Wednesday night when the expectant mother was about to be ferried to Santa Maria Hospital on Chilubi Island for medical attention.

Chilubi District Community Health Officer Ernest Mutale confirmed the development to ZANIS today.

Dr Mutale said the pregnant woman was referred to Santa Maria hospital on the Island due to complications in her pregnancy.

He however said due to lack of reliable transport the woman unfortunately ended up delivering in the boat.

Dr Mutale who is stationed at Santa Maria Hospital on Chilubi Island has strongly appealed to government to urgently send transport to Chilubi health office to help serve the community both on Chilubi mainland and the Island.

And Northern Province Permanent Secretary Hlobotha Nkunika who is in Chilubi district on a tour of developmental projects has described the giving of birth by a pregnant woman on a boat as unfortunate.

Mr Nkunika said he will make sure that adequate transport both on Chilubi mainland and the Island is provided to the department of health to easy the challenges of transport in the district.

He however said government has already started the construction of a General Hospital on Chilubi mainland while a District Hospital is also earmarked for development on Chilubi Island in a bid to enhance the standard of healthcare in the district.

Mr Nkunika has since appealed to people of Chilubi to give government ample time to facilitate tangible development in the area.
