Rotten maize seized

Mongu, February 27, ZANIS — Mongu Municipal council confiscated and seized about two tonnes of rotten maize at Mongu APG Milling company yesterday.

Mongu Municipal Council Environmental Specialist Matongo Ngoma who led the council delegation said the maize was confiscated because it is unfit for human consumption.

Mr Ngoma said the council was following up a public tip off and discovered that the maize in the APG shed was actually rotten.

Meanwhile, APG Milling General Manager Joseph Jaulani has refuted claims that the company was mixing the rotten maize with good quality grain to make mealie meal.

Mr Jaulani said the rotting of the maize in the company’s shed was caused by lack of poly plastic at the base during stock piling of the maize bags.

He however, assured the residents in the province that the destroyed maize will not affect the flowing of mealie meal in the district and province at large as there is enough maize stored by his company.

The seized maize bags have since been burnt at the Kaande dump site under the supervision of the council and Health Inspectors.
