Govt sends relief maize to Serenje

——-The Disaster Management and Mitigation Unit (DMMU) under the Office of the Vice President has commenced relief food distribution in hunger-prone areas of Serenje district of Central Province.

 

The relief food distribution exercise follows a request by the District Disaster Management and Mitigation Committee which recommended for supplementary food distribution in hungwe stricken areas of Serenje.

 

Serenje Economical Council chairperson, Aaron Soko told ZANIS yesterday that 200 by 50 bags of maize were delivered in Zambia compound and another 200 by 50 bags of maize was distributed to Tenge Village and a similar amount of the consignment was delivered to Chief Muchinda’s area.

 

Mr Soko also disclosed that 200 by 50 bags of maize will be distributed to Kabeta and another 200 by 50 bags of maize will distributed to Masunga in the same locality.

 

Mr Soko has thanked the DMMU for working in conjunction with the FRA for the positive response, saying the maize was delivered at on good time and will help cushion hunger in many households.

 

He said the remaining consignment will be distributed by helicopter to hard-to-reach devastated areas such as Chisomo, Kabansa and Kaombe because the roads are in bad state during the rainy season.

 

Mr Soko has appealed to the Office of the Vice President to release the helicopter soon so that the commodity could be distributed to the people in good time.

 

The District Disaster Management and Mitigation Committee, which is chaired   by the District Commissioner, Charles Mwelwa, received 1000 metric tonnes of relief maize from the DMMU under the Office of the Vice President for argent distribution in the area.
