The Professional Teachers Union of Zambia (PROTUZ) has added its voice to the multitudes who have welcomed the recently announced national budget saying the intended massive recruitment of teachers will improve the pupil-teacher ratio.

Announcing the 2022 national budget last week, Finance Minister Situmbeko Musokotwane said government will recruit 30,000 teachers in 2022.

PROTUZ North Western Province Coordinator, Gilly Kakunta, said most schools in rural areas do not have enough teachers, a situation that compromises the quality of education.

“In most cases, you will find that a school running from grade one to seven only has two or three teachers, “ Mr Kakunta said. “So, with the pronouncement by government to recruit 30,000 teachers, we are very happy.”

Mr Kakunta encouraged the government to equitably distribute the teachers once recruited.
