Mufulira’s Buteko Market gutted

FIRE has slept through Buteko market in Mufulira destroying property worth millions of kwacha.

Mufulira mayor Gift Mushinge confirmed the development in an interview.

He, however, said a committee has been instituted to ascertain the course of the fire.

“Yes, I can confirm that Buteko market was on fire. The damage is extensive and [property worth] millions [of kwacha] lost. The damage is way too extensive. We have worked through the night to stop the fire. For now, we have instituted a committee that will shortly give an update on the damage and property lost. We will also give later an update on what caused the fire and what time it started. But for now I can say the damage is extensive,” Mushinge said.

A trader affected by the inferno said, “We’re shocked by the fire that has gutted the market”.

“Ala it’s so sad! This is the market where we depend to keep our families. I have lost all my goods here and I don’t know what to do now. I don’t even know what caused this fire. I leave everything in the hands of God,” said Naomi Chileya./SM
