Most farmers hold onto their maize, waiting for higher price

The Millers Association of Zambia (MAZ) says its members have enough maize stock to last February 2018 and beyond.

MAZ president Andrew Chintala says most farmers were holding onto their maize as they wait for the price to go up before offloading the commodity on the market.

He told ZANIS in a telephone interview that the market is likely to be saturated with maize once farmers offload the grain.

Mr. Chintala however, expressed concern with the poor rainfall pattern that some parts of the country are experiencing.

He said the dry spell which the Southern part of the Country is experiencing, the potential to affect this year’s crop harvest is imminent.

He explained that the country will experience a crop reduction in the 2017/2018 farming season and not a crop failure.

Mr Chintala implored the farming community not to despair as the weather pattern can change at any given time.
