An economist says the planned creation of new ministries is ill-timed considering the economic challenges the country is facing.

Yusuf Dodia notes that Zambia’s economy is currently on its knees with foreign debt standing at US$9 billion and domestic debt in excess of K5 billion.

Mr Dodia says there is need for the economy to be managed in a more cost effective manner and avoid unnecessary expenditures.

He says it is extremely important that the country does not create any elaborate structures that will take up the resources that can be used to bring the economy back on track.

Mr Dodia states that the creation of new ministries can only be justified if this will contribute to the country’s economic growth.
