Hunger is reportedly rooming in Sioma and Shangombo district of Western Province. While a 25kg bag of breakfast Millie Meal is costing K150, the food reserve agency has in store a total of 25, 176 X 50kg of maize lying idle in its Nangweshi shed.

The opposition United Party for National Development (UPND) has observed that mealie meal prices are likely to go up considering that most of the maize has been bought by private buyers in the ongoing marketing season.

UPND Chairman for Rural Reconstruction and Development Moono Mapani notes that government through the Food Reserve Agency (FRA) has not bought enough maize stocks because of the low price the FRA is offering farmers compared to what private buyers are offering.

He says this is dangerous for the nation because the private buyers will have control over the mealie meal price.

Mr Mapani states that if the government was concerned about securing the country’s food security, they should heed the concerns raised by various stakeholders who argued that the maize floor price was low.
