A 12-YEAR-OLD boy of Mpatamatu in Luanshya has drowned in a disused open-pit mine at the China Non-Ferrous Metal Mining Corporation Luanshya Copper Mines (CLM).
Copperbelt commissioner of police Charity Katanga and CLM head of public relations and local business development Sydney Chileya confirmed this yesterday.
Ms Katanga said the incident happened on Sunday around 14:30 hours at Muliashi open-pit mine while the boy was swimming with his two friends.
She identified the deceased as Sekelani Ng’ambi of house No. 719/27, a grade seven pupil at Nkambo Primary School in Mpatamatu.
Mr Chileya said the area is secure enough and advised parents to sensitise their children on the dangers of swimming at the mine.
