A garden boy, who was so cruel that he fractured his wife’s leg for no apparent reason, has been divorced in a Lusaka local court.

This is in a case in which Beatrice Makofi, 33, of old Kanyama compound sued her husband, Bitwell Sakala, 40, for divorce for being cruel and a womanizer.
The two got married in 1999 and have four children.
Makofi told Senior Court Magistrate Daniel Phiri sitting with Magistrates Ackim Phiri and Sarah Nyendwa at Kanyama Local Court that all was well until 2002 when Sakala started beating her.
She explained from 2010 Sakala started having girlfriends, adding that her husband did not provide for the family because he only bought a bag mealie meal when he got paid.
Makofi said in 2013 Sakala brought his child from another woman who was one year and eight months. She kept the child who was now five years old.
Asked by the court why he beat his wife, Makofi said that he did so out of jealous and that the other time he whipped her with an electric cable for finishing mealie meal.
Makofi produced the X-ray for her fractured leg and photos showing how she was whipped with an electric cable.
In defense, Sakala said that he beat Makofi because she shouted at him, adding and he did not have money for housekeep.
Sakala then went to kneel down before Makofi and asked for forgiveness when the court asked him to do so but Makofi refused and said Sakala could not change his behaviour.
Magistrate Daniel Phiri said that Sakala was a violent man who mercilessly beat up his wife as evidenced by photos and X-rays before the court.
He granted the couple divorce ordering Sakala to compensate Makofi with K8000 with initial payment of K1000 followed by monthly installments of K250 and to be paying children maintenance fee of K400 per month. Property acquired together to be shared equally.
