POLICE on the Copperbelt have intensified patrols in residential areas on the Copperbelt following a spate of thefts in government schools where unscrupulous people are stealing computers and other electronic appliances.

In Mufulira, thieves broke into Pamodzi Girls Secondary School last week, stealing 64 computers and electronic appliances valued at K140, 000.

A similar incident was reported in Kitwe’s Ipusukilo township where unknown people ransacked Ipusukilo Primary School, stealing 24 computers, while at Chamboli High School, thieves got away with 10 computers.

Copperbelt commissioner of police Joyce Kasosa has since appealed to members of the public with information on the theft of computers in government schools to report to the nearest police station.
“We can only curb crime here on the Copperbelt with help from members of the public. As police, we need information from people in the communities; they know who these people are and where they are found,” Ms Kasosa said.

She also appealed to computer buyers on the market to be alert of any suspicious people offering to sell them the devices at a cheaper price.
Ms Kasosa, however, said police have intensified patrols in townships and around government schools to safeguard the lives of people and property.

“Just on Sunday, thieves broke into Ndeke Secondary School in Kitwe, but our officers who were on patrol quickly rushed to the premises, and the criminals had to abandon whatever they had stolen and ran away,” she said.

Ms Kasosa said community members must be vigilant and submit names of suspected criminals to police if crime is to be curbed.
“These criminals live in the community and most people know them. If you are a parent and you know your child is a thief, please report that child to the police,” she said.
