Forty Seven unionized workers at Zambezi Portland Cement in Ndola on the Copperbelt have been fired.

Meanwhile, management at the cement plant plans to lay off 53 other workers following the drastic reduction in cement sales at the company following the emergence of new players on the market.

Mine Workers Union of Zambia-MUZ-General Secretary Joseph Chewe has asked management at the cement manufacturing plant to immediately reverse the dismissal of the 47 workers.

Mr Chewe says procedure was not followed in dismissing the said workers.

He has told a media briefing in Kitwe today that efforts to dialogue with management over the latest dismissals have failed.

The MUZ General Secretary has since asked Government to intervene in the matter.

And United Mine Workers Union of Zambia UMUZ President Wisdom Ngwira has described the dismissal of the 47 workers as unfair.

Mr Ngwira has also pleaded with Zambezi Portland management not to go ahead and fire the 57 other workers.

And when reached for a comment Zambezi Portland Manager Voice Mukabila refused to comment over the matter.

Mr Mukabila instead referred all queries to company Director of operations Daniel Ventigrigila.

  2. Our Unions don’t push issues like South African Unions no they just eat money.
    @muzo I agree with you.

  3. Not long enough we heard people celebrated the coming of new management and that there shall be further improvements in terms of working conditions. Is this the improvement the management talked about?
