A barman in France was charged with manslaughter, and sentenced to a suspended four-month jail term, after serving a customer 56 shots in one night, resulting in the man’s death.

The Guardian reports that the incident took place last year at a bar called Starter in the French town of Clermont-Ferrand.

The pub had a shots contest to see who could drink the most shots each night and a customer called Renaud Prudhomme broke the record on the night in question by downing 56 shots.

He had to be helped home by his daughter and friends but they had to contact the emergency services that night and the 56-year-old passed away in hospital the next day.

“My father died by his own hand but it was the bar that served him the drinks,” she said at the time.

The man who served him, Gilles Crepin, admitted that he had erred in displaying the leaderboard, thus encouraging the behaviour. He was given a four-month suspended sentence and banned from working behind the bar for a year.

His lawyer has said they will appeal as they believe the man’s daughter encouraged him to break the record and that Prudhomme had underlying respiratory and alcohol problems.

However, the lawyer for Prudhomme’s daughter says she was not at the bar at the time of the drinking contest.
