POLICE in Mansa have arrested a 35-year-old traditional healer and three other people for allegedly conducting an illegal abortion.
Luapula Province commissioner of police Webby Shula said in an interview yesterday that Sara Phiri aborted her eight-month pregnancy with help of her two friends, Elizabeth Chishala, 22, and Rosemary Tembo, 24, after being given some herbs by the traditional healer, Mofya Muleso.
He said this happened on Tuesday around 19:00 hours at Sunday village in Chief Chimese’s area.
Mr Shula said the suspects allegedly threw the foetus into a pit latrine but it was retrieved by the police.
“The owner of the property where the suspect stays reported the matter to the police.
“The foetus was taken to Mansa District Hospital mortuary and a post-mortem will be conducted on it. The four suspects are currently in police custody,” Mr Shula said.
