The leaders of Member States of the International Conference on the Great Lakes Region have called on the Government in Burundi to immediately call off the elections.

This is according to the final communique of the Extraordinary Summit of the International Conference on the Great Lakes Region released on Monday.

The leaders also strongly urged all parties in Burundi to stop the on-going acts of violence and pursue dialogue and peace.

The Heads of States have also urged the government to respect the constitutional rights of the people of Burundi and also observe the pact signed under the Great Lakes Region.

ZNBC’s Mwila Nsofu reports from Luanda that the summit also appointed a delegation of Heads of States and Government to travel to Burundi as soon as possible, to assess the situation and contribute to a peaceful solution of the current crisis.

The delegation will be composed by South Africa, Kenya, Uganda and Tanzania.

President Edgar Lungu was among six Heads of states that gathered in Luanda-Angola for the Extra-ordinary meeting.
