Government is saddened about the increased road carnages that the country has been experiencing.

Transport, Works and Supply and Communications Minister, Yamfwa Mukanga, the loss of lives through road traffic accidents is retrogressive to the nation as it causes death or permanent disabilities.

Mr Mukanga was speaking during the launch of Michelin X Coach Tropic Z Tyre by Superdoll in Lusaka today.

He observed that the use of sub-standard tyres is among the many reasons that have led to escalating numbers of road traffic accidents, further stating that motorists should learn to choose the right tyres for specific applications.

The transport minister urged the Zambia Bureau of Standards to work in collaboration with the Road Transport and Safety Agency (RTSA) as well as the Zambia Police in safeguarding the lives of the people.

He congratulated Superdoll for ensuring the safety and comfort of traveling people since its establishment and hoped that the company will continue to be the manufacturer for many years to come.

Meanwhile, Mr Mukanga has also instructed RTSA to engage bus operators in dialogue over the reduction in bus fares.

And RTSA Chief Executive Officer, Zindaba Soko, said the country recorded over 32,000 road traffic accidents in 2014, adding that over 200 accidents were due to the use of defective tyres.

Mr Soko also appealed to Zambia Bureau of Standards to ensure that the tyres that are imported in the country are durable.

And Michelin Managing Director Seif Ali said Superdoll is committed to providing quality tyres especially developed for safety and mileage despite the hot climate conditions.
