EFF President Julius Malema has also weighed in on xenophobic attacks.

He was addressing Freedom Day celebrations in Durban.

The ANC also held a rally in a nearby stadium.

Malema says that much still needed to be done to uplift the poor. “This country belongs to all who live in it and it can’t be all who live in it if ownership is reserved to the minority whites alone. What democracy are you talking about when 21 years into democracy total ownership is still reflective of colonial times.”

We are not proud of what happened in the few weeks before today’s celebration.

Malema decried the attacks on foreign nationals. “Today, we were supposed to be the most proud nation, today we were supposed to be very proud of the contribution but I stand before you today very ashamed to be a South African. We are not proud of what happened in the few weeks before today’s celebration, ” he says.

The event was closely monitored by a large police contingent.
