I don’t understand why l steal

THE Choma Magistrate’s Court has slapped an 18-month jail sentence with hard labour on a man of Choma for housebreaking and theft of goods worth K1,500.
In this case, Moses Chivuwo was charged with housebreaking and theft.
Chivuwo, on March 10 this year in Choma, jointly and whilst acting with others unknown, entered Crispin Hakoola’s house with intent to commit a felony.
Chivuwo stole a home theatre system and six curtains worth K1,500.
In mitigation, Chivuwo pleaded with chief resident magistrate Willie Sinyangwe to be lenient on him.
“I also don’t understand why I commit these crimes, maybe it is an illness,” Chivuwo told Mr Sinyangwe last Thursday when he appeared for written facts.
Facts are that on the fateful morning around 07:15 hours, Mr Hakoola left his house secured and reported for work at Choma General Hospital.
He received a visitor around 09:00 hours whom he took home.
The court heard that, Mr Hakoola arrived at home, he found the door open and that his home theatre system and curtains were missing.
He reported the matter to Choma Central Police and Chivuwo was arrested after investigations.
Chivuwo admitted having stolen the property and was subsequently charged and arrested for housebreaking and theft.
The stolen property was not recovered.
Asked whether the facts were correct, Chivuwo replied in the affirmative.
“I agree with you that your propensity to break and steal into people’s homes is an illness because there are so many cases where you broke and stole in people’s homes.
“They say time is a healer and I think you need time to be healed of this illness. I send you to prison for 18 months,” Mr Sinyangwe said.-Zambia Daily Mail CHOMBA MUSIKA.
