Commerce, Trade and Industry Permanent Secretary Siakalenge Siazongo has called for concerted efforts from Common Market for Eastern and Southern Africa (COMESA) member states to urgently transform the economy of the region through industrialization.

Mr. Siazongo said industrialization will provide for a structural transformation, sustainable growth and creation of jobs for people in the region and beyond.

He said this in Lusaka today when he officially opened a regional validation workshop for the COMESA industrial policy.

He pointed out that the growth of many of the domestic economies of countries in the region has been spurred by production and trading in primary products which undermine the economic transformation and diversification due to vulnerabilities in the international market.

Mr. Siazongo has since urged the participants from around the region to come up with a well-designed implementation plan which will help the COMESA member states to achieve its desired goals.

And COMESA Assistant Secretary General of Programmes, Kipyego  Cheluget said the meeting has brought together experts in industrial development from the region  with  the aim of finalizing the common industrial policy in line with the theme of the upcoming 2015 COMESA summit.

Dr. Cheluget said the COMESA industrial policy was of paramount importance hence member states should cooperate at regional level in order to build a diversified, innovative and globally competitive industrial base.
