Govt advised to honour more freedom fighters this year

Chisamba, March 10th, 2015, ZANIS —-  CHIEF CHAMUKA of the Lenje speaking people in central province has advised government to honour  more freedom fighters this year.

The chief has said government should consider honouring more freedom fighters especially women freedom fighters who he said played a leading role during the struggle for independence.

Speaking in an interview with ZANIS at his palace today, Chief Chamuka stressed the need for the media to go into the rural districts and highlight the activities by the women that helped during independence struggle.

He blamed the media fraternity for not highlighting the role women freedom fighters played in the struggle for independence saying because of this government has over the years honoured more male freedom fighters since independence.

The chief has said that women freedom played important and sacrificial roles during the struggle for independence hence the need for them to honoured by setting up empowerment programmes like cooperatives.

“I am appealing to the government to consider more women cooperatives this year in order to empower them, ” said Chamuka.

The Chief has however appealed to the media in the country to consider highlighting activities by the women. He accused the media of giving men more coverage than women.

The chief said women are an important partner in development hence the need for the media to help the women through coverage so that the women can   receive support.
