THE Zambia Union of Journalists (ZUJ) has welcomed the appointment of Roan member of Parliament (MP) Chishimba Kambwili as Minister of Information and Broadcasting Services.
Union general-secretary Angela Chishimba said in an interview yesterday that the media fraternity is happy with Mr Kambwili’s appointment because he is action-oriented and capable of bringing change to the media industry.
“We saw this when he acted as Minister of Labour and Social Security last year and ordered Times of Zambia to pay salary arrears to its employees,” Ms Chishimba said.
She urged Mr Kambwili to take keen interest in ensuring efficiency in the operations of Zambia Daily Mail, Times of Zambia and Zambia National Broadcasting Corporation (ZNBC).
“We hope that Government will find a way forward by recapitalising the public media,” Ms Chishimba said.
And Press Association of Zambia (PAZA) executive secretary Patson Phiri said in a separate interview that Mr Kambwili’s public posture is that of a vigilant person.
“We know him as a vigilant man, very strong in protecting the credit of the ministry and in getting things done. This was seen when he was Minister of Youth and Sport and, therefore, we do not expect him to interfere with media’s affairs,” he said.
Mr Phiri said PAZA does not expect any form of abuse of the media from Mr Kambwili because he is a competent minister.
“We are happy and expect a vibrant and well managed media under his leadership,” he said.
