Government has been commended for implementing and disbursing K75,000.00 worth of loans to vulnerable women in Serenje district.

ZANIS reports that the loans have been provided to the women beneficiaries through the Ministry of Community Development Mother and Child Health in partnership with the Women Village Bank Programme.

Serenje District Commissioner Charles Mwelwa said the initiative was timely as it was aimed at  alleviating poverty among the women through implementation of viable projects.

Mr Mwelwa was speaking yesterday at Ibolelo Community Development Training Center when he disbursed the money to 75 women drawn from Serenje peri-urban and Mulilima scheme who each received K1,000.00.

Mr Mwelwa said the overall objective of loans is to empower vulnerable women in order to improve their livelihood as well as promote entrepreneurship skills to enhance wealth creation.

The District Commissioner has since urged the beneficiaries to put the money to good use adding and avoid being queried in the future for failure to plan and utilize the loans for the intended empowerment purpose.

And Serenje District Community Development Officer Trudy Mukosha revealed that the repayments and the interest generated from the pay back loans should also be used to provide new or additional loans to other beneficiaries.

And one of the beneficiaries for Serenje peri-urban Grace Mukosha thanked the government for providing them with soft loans adding that their lives would improve at the house-hold level through the projects that will be implemented.

Another beneficiary Patricia Mulenga at Mulilima scheme said government should expect excellence and professionalism in the execution of their businesses as they had undergone the necessary skills training.

Ms Mulenga implored her fellow women to work extra hard and pay back the loans regardless of the challenges they might face.
