—Voting for Zambia’s 6th President has closed in Lufwanyama District on the Copperbelt Province with about 51 rejected ballots.

District Electoral Officer, Henry Chawa, has noted that out of the 55 polling stations only 30 have been counted so far.

He said from the 30 that have been counted United Party for National Development’s (UPND) candidate Hakainde Hichilema  has recorded  2,099 votes,4th  Revolution’s Eric Chanda 28,Patriotic Front’s (PF) Edgar Lungu 1703 and Godfrey Miyanda for the Heritage Party 31.

Others are Edith Nawakwi for Forum for Democracy and Development (FDD) with 23 votes, Christian Democratic Party (CDP) Dan Pule 7, Green Party’s Peter Sinkamba 3, Forum for Democratic Alternatives (FDA) Ludwig Sondashi 2 and National Restoration Party (NAREP) Elias Chipimo Jr 23.

Tilyenji Kaunda of UNIP has managed 26 votes while the MMD has recorded 30.

The District Electoral Officer, however, says results for the remaining 25 polling stations will be ready by 13:00 hours this afternoon.

Meanwhile, Mr Chawa is saddened by high rates of voter apathy in almost all the polling stations which caused the voter turn out to be low.

He, however, attributed the situation to bad weather, adding that other people have migrated to far flung areas to farm and that most youths are not yet registered.

Mr Chawa further noted that the environment remains calm in the district and no acts of violence have been recorded so far.

The Presidential by- election was necessitated by the passing away of Zambia’s 5th President, Michael Sata, who died in October last year at a London hospital.
