The Joint Industrial Council (JIC) has awarded an eight percent pay rise across the board for unionized construction workers.

JIC president Micheal Nyirenda  disclosed this in an interview in Lusaka, today.

Mr. Nyirenda  said this year’s increase is against the backdrop of  last year’s increment of almost 22 percent in terms of the wage and other conditions of service.

He said JIC will also be sitting in September later this year to negotiate for period 2016-2017 on the wage and conditions of service.

Mr Nyirenda said that many of the association’s members are paying way above the minimum stipulated in the Collective Agreement.

He said his council is happy to have continued looking after the workforce through its members and providing decent work opportunities.

Mr Nyirenda said that the association is proud of the excellent record of the members in terms of compliance with labour laws.

JIC comprises the Association of Building and Civil Engineering Contractors (ABCEC) and the National Union of Building, Engineering and General Workers (NUBEGW).
