The Electoral Commission of Zambia (ECZ) has completed training of more than 200 polling officers in Mufumbwe District in North-western Province ahead of the forthcoming January 20 presidential by election.

The by-election comes after the death of President Michael Sata who died on 29 October last year at King Edward Hospital.

District Voter Education Committee (DVEC) Coordinator Ezula Kanchinyala said the commission has between January 7th and 9th trained 220 polling officers who include presiding officers, polling assistants and ushers.

Mr Kanchinyala stated that the trained electoral officers will be deployed to the 40 polling stations in the 16 wards of Mufumbwe.

Mr Kanchinyala was speaking in an interview with ZANIS in Mufumbwe yesterday.

“We received many applications from people so the response has been very good. We will be sending the officers to their respective polling stations starting from the 17th of January,” he said.

Mr Kachinyala further disclosed that the commission through DVEC has carried out a number of sensitisation programmes in Mufumbwe adding that this will help address voter apathy in the coming by election.

“As DVEC despite having some challenges of fuel and transport we managed to cover all parts of the district even the furthest part which is Mufumbwe south,” he said.

Mr Kanchinyala has since stated that the district has prepared well for this year’s by election.
