Rainford Kalaba is new Chipolopolo captain

Lusaka, January 3, 2015, ZANIS–National soccer team Midfield Rainford Kalaba has been appointed new captain for the Chipolopolo.

 

Football Association of Zambia (FAZ) Communications Manager Nkweto Tembwe said Kalaba has taken over from Stopilla Nsunzu who has voluntarily relinquished the arm band.

 

In a statement availed to ZANIS in Lusaka today,Tembwe disclosed that Kalaba was handed over the Captainship during a brief handover ceremony in Johannesburg, South Africa today.

 

Nsunzu said he renounced his position as team captain because he wants to concentrate on his core responsibility as a defender for the team.

 

According to the statement, Nsunzu further said that he was grateful that he had earlier been given such a big responsibility especially that his reign was during the qualifiers for the 2015 Africa cup series.

 

And Chipolopolo coach Honour Janza said he was happy with the humility Nsunzu had demonstrated of putting the team’s interest above oneself.

 

Janza described Nsunzu’s action as a true mark of great leadership.

 

Meanwhile, new skipper Kalaba emphasised the need for collective responsibility in the team.

 

He added that he recognised other senior players as captains in their own right despite him being the one to wear the arm band.

 

The senior players that were present at the ceremony were James Chamanga, Kennedy Mweene, vice-captain Nathan Sinkala and Davies Nkausu.

 

Kalaba has since been officially presented to the team as Chipolopolo Captain.

 

By assuming this role Kalaba has entered the hall of fame of captains for the Zambia National soccer Team which include Kalusha Bwalya, Christopher Katongo, Elijah Tana, Jones Chilengi, Dickson Makwaza, and Ashious Mwelu among others.
