The Electoral Commission of Zambia (ECZ) says eleven political parties have so far confirmed participation in the 20th January President Election.

Speaking during a meeting for all aspiring presidential candidates in Lusaka this morning, ECZ Chairperson Justice Irene Mambilima says all the political parties apart from the ruling Patriotic Front have since indicated to the Commission the respective dates on which they want their candidates to file nominations.

Justice Mambilima says the Patriotic Front will have to agree with the Commission by the end of the day on which date they would want their candidate to file the nominations.

She thanked the presidential candidates for responding to the commission’s invitation.

Justice Mambilima explained that the briefing is aimed at taking the candidates through the nomination process so that they are conversant with the requirements and what is expected of them.

And Justice Mambilima has called on political parties, candidates and other stakeholders to conduct themselves in a responsible and peaceful manner during the campaigns and after the election.

She says each and every citizen should realize that they have a role to play to contribute to a peaceful transition through the conduct of peaceful election.

The ECZ Chairperson says the commission will be on high alert to handle any cases of conflict that may arise during this period.

She has also reiterated that the commission will not extend the dates for filling of nominations.

Meanwhile MMD president Nevers Mumba who was spotted at the Electoral Commission of Zambia could not attend the meeting of presidential candidates following the High Court’s decision to declare former President Rupiah Banda as the rightful MMD presidential candidate.

Mr Banda was among those who attended the meeting for presidential candidates.

Dr Mumba who was at the ECZ with the intention of attending the meeting could not do so after he received a call from his lawyers informing him of the Court’s decision.
