Serenje police intercept illegal immigrants

Serenje, Dec 5/14 ZANIS——Police in Serenje disitrict in Central province yesterday intercepted a Zambian truck carrying 37 Ethiopian illegal immigrants.

 

Central Province Police Commissioner, Standwell Lungu, confirmed the incident to ZANIS in an interview.

Mr Lungu said the 37 Ethiopian male illegal immigrants, among them a 10-year-old boy, were intercepted at Pensulo Police check point around 02:30hrs.

 

Mr Lungu said the illegal immigrants, who were headed for South Africa, boarded the Zambian Mercedes Benz truck registration number ACZ 1191 belonging to Akapendo Farm of Kapiri Mposhi.

 

The Central Province Police Commissioner said police have since handed over the 37 illegal immigrants to the Immigration Department.

 

The illegal immigrants are appearing in court today.

 

However, efforts to get a comment from the Immigration Department failed.

 

And police have also arrested two Kapiri Mposhi drivers of the truck belonging to Akapendo Farm which was carrying the Ethiopian illegal immigrants.

 

The drivers, Tobias Tumbela, 46 and Francis Hachonga Mwanachingwala, 32, have been charged with Human Trafficking and will appear in court soon.
