THREE men who identified the fugitive Mailoni brothers in Luano valley last year leading to their death have received K50,000 cash from the Zambia Police Service.
The three – Feston Kalipenta, his younger brother Oliver and Kalumba Chola of Chimika area in Chembe chiefdom-received their reward from Central province commissioner of police Standwell Lungu at the Division Headquarters in Kabwe on Wednesday.
In 2012, the then Inspector-General of Police Martin Malama announced that the Zambia Police Service would offer  a K50,000 cash reward for people with information leading to the arrest of the Mailoni brothers.
“God has given us this money,” an excited Mr Kalipenta said after they received the money. “We did not know that we were going to receive this money, and God has passed through the Government for us to get this money.”
He thanked Government for having deployed soldiers to Chimika who eventually killed the fugitive brothers who killed about 12 during their reign of terror which started in 2007.
“We decided to claim the reward and we are so thankful that they have finally decided to give us this money.
“We will share this money equally and use it to buy cattle and ploughs to enhance our farming,” Mr Kalipenta said.
Earlier, Mr Lungu said the trio provided important information to security forces deployed in Luano valley that led to the killing of the Mailoni brothers.
“The police had offered a reward to any person who was going to give information that would lead to the arrest and prosecution of the three notorious criminals who were commonly known as the Mailoni brothers.
“Today (Wednesday), we want to honour that promise. The office of Inspector General of Police has released the money to be given to the three gentlemen that assisted the security forces gun down the three notorious criminals,” Mr Lungu said.
The trio, on June 24 last year, accompanied Corporal Joy Shapela on patrol and spotted Mika, Stephen, and Fabian in Tukoma area.
Corporal Shapela shot the notorious Mailoni brothers dead and he was honoured with, a Golden Jubilee medal during the 50th independence celebrations.
