—Minister of Education, Science, Vocational Training and Early Education, John Phiri, says government is in the process of enacting a law to guide the provision of library services in the country.

Dr Phiri said this in a speech read for him by North-western Province Permanent Secretary, Amos Malupenga, at the launch of the National Library Week in Solwezi.

The minister observed that library and information services are a key to the provision of knowledge and information to members of the public and should, therefore, be regulated.

Meanwhile Library and Information Association of Zambia President, Velenasi Munsanje, said lack of legislation on library and information services has led to a situation where information centres are being manned by unqualified personnel.

Ms Munsanje said the development has resulted in a number of professionals shunning library services despite the growing demand for information.

She has since appealed to the Ministry of Education to ensure that the National Library Bill is enacted quickly.
