Mukuni Secondary School in Kazungula district has become the first ever to have a science laboratory constructed from Constituency Development Funds (CDF).

Speaking at the official opening of the school laboratory yesterday, Katombola Member of Parliament Derrick Livune expressed gratitude over the completion of the project.

Mr. Livune charged that the opening of the laboratory marked the end of pupils at the school from being subjected to be taken to Hillcrest Technical Secondary School in Livingstone to sit for national examinations every year.

He said he was happy to have learnt that Mukuni Secondary School has already been given an examination centre status for internal candidates only by the Examination Council of Zambia (ECZ).

Mr. Livune urged the school management to dialogue further with ECZ so that the school can be given an external candidate centre number so that more of people who would want to re-sit for their examinations in certain subjects can be considering Mukuni Secondary school as well.

He however, observed that teaching of the sciences in most schools leaves much to be desired because a number of secondary schools have laboratories which are too small to accommodate all pupils enrolled at the school.

Mr. Livune explained that it is for this reason that some potential future doctors, scientists and engineers opt to drop science on the way.

He added that most laboratories do not have apparatus, chemicals and chairs for the pupils to use making it difficult for them to perform well because of not learning in a conducive environment.

Mr. Livune thanked the Kazungula District Council for their contribution and other cooperating partners for their gesture towards the laboratory construction.

Earlier, Mukuni Secondary School PTA Chairperson Bridget Meyer disclosed that the science laboratory took six years to be completed because of a number of challenges encountered on the way.

Mrs. Meyer said due to the insufficiency of funds, there are things still needed to be done for the laboratory such as purchasing of chemicals, chairs, apparatus and others.
