FRA assures Mkushi farmers of pay

Mkushi, November 20th, 2014, ZANIS —   The Food Reserve Agency (FRA) in Mkushi has assured farmers that they will be paid their money by next week.

Addressing irate farmers who stormed the office of the District Commissioner, FRA Mkushi manager, Wesley Machosa told the farmers that government has released 500 million Kwacha to pay the affected farmers.

Mr. Machosa, who was flanked by the Mkushi District Commissioner, Luka Mwamba, further explained to the farmers that the role of the FRA was to enhance food security in the country.

It was for this reason that the Agency was working around the clock to pay the farmers so that they can plan and commence the preparations for the coming farming season, he said.

The FRA manager also apologized to the farmers for the delay in payment of money owed to the farmers.

But some farmers expressed skepticism and suggested that if the FRA had no money to pay them, it was better the agency gives them farming inputs instead, so that they commence their farming activities.

On Tuesday, farmers again stormed the District Commissioner’s office, threatening to ‘camp’ at the offices until their money was paid.

And in his address to the farmers, Mkushi District Commissioner, Luka Mwamba, sympathized with them for the delay in receiving their money.

Mr. Mwamba, who apologized to the farmers, called on them to remain calm, as the government was doing everything possible to pay them what was owed to them.

He further appealed to the farmers not to be influenced by politicians who are taking advantage of the situation, to gain undue political mileage. .
